Living beside the water in Belhaven fed her imagination of the creatures of the sea while teaching her two sons about oceans in the 1980s. ‘Sea Zoo’ started with her 10 original poems about the sea creatures. Lynne would recite these to their younger son who was two at the time while the older son would cavort in the water acting out whatever sea animal it was.
This was great fun!! Soon afterward Lynne composed melodies to go along with the poems, scored them as piano solos for the elementary student and, voila, “Sea Zoo” was born containing 10 original songs. “The Octopus”, “The Shark”, “The Lobster”, and the other seven animals are written as if the sea creature was singing directly to the child, giving hints as to what it is (Don’t wade out! Best go in! When you see my dorsal fin”). As the child is delighted with the song, he has no idea that the lyrics are purposely written these in riddle form, which is a pre-requisite in elementary language arts curriculum; teaches the child math skills ( Ex. “The Octopus”--One, two, three, four, don’t stop now! There are more! Five, six, seven, eight, having eight is just great!), and zoology on primary and elementary level.
These beginner piano solos were published by Myklas Music Press of Denver, CO. “The Shark” and “The Lobster” immediately were chosen by the National Federation of Music Clubs for their required performing list for their contests. Many of these songs have stayed on this list for years. They are now published by Alfred Music Publishing.

Lynne’s “Dinosaur Piano Collection” (pub. By Lynne Cox Publications) and ‘Sea Zoo’ songs (pub. by Alfred Music Publishing) have won many state awards (NC) for elementary compositions by the NC Federation of Music Clubs. Several ‘Sea Zoo’ songs have been chosen for their national contest piano lists by the National Federation of Music Clubs for over 20 years. (‘The Minnow’, ‘The Shark’, etc.). ‘Pteranodon’, from her Dinosaur Collection, was chosen twice by the NC Music Teachers Association.
It was Lynne’s dream to also combine a matching coloring book for the Sea Zoo songs. With Kim Dills and Catherine Broadhead hired as the visual arts creators, the Sea Zoo coloring book was completed with the cartoon-like picture of the sea animal on the right hand side of the book and the lyrics on the left. (does not include piano score-need sheet music for these) Observing her students she realized that not only was it fun to color and sing at the same time but that by incorporating visual and performing arts learning was facilitated and reinforced.
‘Noah’s Ark Series’ is her newest collection and features elementary global music festuring many cultures presented by different animals around the world (hence:'Noah's Ark'). For the tango, Lynne chose to feature ‘The Iguana’; for mid-eastern music, ‘Cruising Down the Nile’; the waltz is introduced to the young piano student by ‘Joey the Wallabee Kangaroo’; lullaby by ‘The Koala’ (Kirian's Lullaby'); and her Celtic offering in strophic form is ‘Sam the Lamb’.
These ‘Noah’s Ark’ songs are presented on her CD, “The American Eagle”. This CD contains ‘The American Eagle’ (a patriotic song commemorating 9/11) and was composed and published in honor of the military, fireman, and rescue workers who are our heroes, ‘Noah’s Ark’ songs, several of the Sea Zoo songs, and two of the classical piano solos featured on her other CD, “Favorite Piano Classics’ performed by Lynne on a Steinway grand piano.
While a Teacher Scholar at the N. C. Center for Advancement of Teaching Lynne researched the importance of music 'from the cradle to the grave' in a paper she wrote entitled 'Music As One of the Eight Multiple Intelligences'. This was based on Dr. Howard Gardner's 'Theory of Multiple Intelligences' which explores different types of intelligence such as linguistic; logical-mathematical; kinesthetic; musical; spatial; interpersonal; intrapersonal; and naturalist. (later added existential). Click here to view paper, 'Music as One of the Eight Multiple Intelligences'.

“Sea Zoo” provides fun, innovative, interactive fun for children and adults. Combining visual and performing arts into an educational experience for the young child, it is Lynne’s sincere hope that it provides quality time between parents/grandparents and children, just as it did for her and her young sons.
